In commemoration of this year’s celebration of World Cancer Day, a leading Non Governmental Organization in Ondo State, the Restoration Of The Dignity Of Womanhood ( ROTDOW) today, 4th February, 2022 took breast cancer awareness campaign to Akure Muslim College to educate the students on breast cancer and how to prevent it.
Addressing the students on this year’s theme: “CLOSE THE CARE GAPS”, the CEO ROTDOW and member of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN), Mrs Olabisi Omolona said her organization put together the sensitization programme to spread the word about cancer among school students.
Mrs. Omolona who said the ultimate goal is to help reduce the incidence of cancer in the country, urged the students most especially the girls to pay rapt attention and also help spread the word that cancer is no longer a death sentence as early detection saves lives.
Giving a presentation on breast cancer, the resource person, Mrs. Juliet Dada, while explaining a woman’s body structure explained what breast cancer is, the signs, symptoms, those who are at risk and how to prevent the disease.
Mrs. Dada who identified aging, family history, obesity, unhealthy lifestyles like excessive alcohol intake as well as smoking among others as factors that increases risk to cancer also noted that painful lumps, reddish swelling of the breast, change of breast colouration among others as signs of breast cancer enjoining the student to visit the nearest health service for examinations and proper management if they see any signs.
She however used the opportunity to charge the students to adopt healthy lifestyles by avoiding smoking, eating healthy, do regular exercise and breast check.
Some other highlights of the event include training on Breast Self Examination as well as a question and answer session.
The team also distributed nose mask to the students.
Also in attendance include Mrs Ojukwu Julianah, VP Academics, Mrs. Kuti VP, Special Duties among other teachers.
In a chat with topshotnews, one of the students, Ms. Oladende Sukura while thanking the organizers for deeming it fit to sensitize them about the diease said she was happy to have learnt more about cancer as there is so much misconception surrounding the disease.
